Deauville, departure city of the Solitaire du Figaro

Heave-ho: A team of 40 high-level skippers have a date with the public in Deauville. In the opinion of open sea skippers themselves, it is more difficult to win the “Figaro” competition than the “Vendée globe”. Race lovers' enthusiasm is then essential to encourage these exceptional sailors facing the open sea. From June 10th to 19th, the competitors will work hard on the dockside to win the race, the eyes to the sea, in front of the public observing them from the quay. Around the “bassin Morny”, fascinating meetings and discussions may take place.

The Solitaire du Figaro 2016 departure will be given on Sunday, June 19th at 1pm sharp. With a theoric total length of 1525 nautical miles (2824 km), the race takes place along the coast and includes four steps:

June 19th: Deauville > Ile de Wight - Cowes ( via Wolf Rock) - 510 nautical miles/944 km

June 26th: Ile de Wight - Cowes > Paimpol (via Land's End and Iroise Sea) - 475 nautical miles/983 km

July 2nd: Paimpol > La Rochelle - 410 nautical miles/759 km

July 6th: La Rochelle > La Rochelle - 130 nautical miles/240 km

The main aim is to keep this event open to the public, to even more people this year, and that skippers and sailing lovers are satisfied with this event. The Figaro race calls 40 to 45 talented skippers. Tent city and basins are in the heart of the city. Public, ship-owners and skippers will then be side by side.

From the sailing perspective, choosing Deauville for the departure makes sense. This City hosted large multihulls, the “Mille miles” took place in front of the “Boardwalk”… In Deauville there is also a sailing framework fascinating skippers. It’s situated at the entrance of the Seine bay and opens on the Channel. The departure will take place there, close to the coast, and the public will attend in the first rows the media launch of the race.

Eric Tabarly and Gérard Petipas, with their renowned experience in the sailing world, founded Pen Duick SA in 1973. The main aim of the company was managing the famous Eric’s boats. Then, in 1985, when Pierre Bojic joined them, the Pen Duick company started to plan and organize oceanic races: the Route du Rhum, the Transat Jacques Vabre, the Transat AG2R LA MONDIALE… In 2012, the Pen Duick took over the race which was previously managed by the Figaro. Created in 1970, the former Course de l'Aurore, is a solo multi-stage sailing race. The one-design character of the race - Figaro Beneteau 2 –, the participation of great solo navigators and the opening of enrolment to amateurs made this competition one of the most popular sport sailing races in France.

It reveals great talents and is the stepping stone of almost all vocations and carriers of sailors that are currently shining in all great oceanic races. Every year, it brings together the best navigators: major stars of the France Championship and future talents. 583 skippers have been participating to this race since its creation in 1970.

The “Figaro Bénéteau 2” is the synthesis of a successful collaboration between the best regatters of the “Classe Figaro Bénéteau”, the “Chantiers Bénéteau” and the architect Marc Lombard.
Since its introduction in 2003, the “Figaro Bénéteau 2” had the hard task of giving new impetus to a unique racing itinerary. This nice, modern and innovating boat has already been fascinating many skippers, who do not hesitate in shouting its praises.
