FACES A LA MER EXHIBITION

The role of portrait in the collection of the “Franciscaines” site

The exhibition about Jacques-Émile Blanche is extended to the “Boardwalk” of Deauville where the doors of cabins in front of the beach are decorated with portraits belonging to the “Franciscaines” collections, be they painted, photographic, caricatured or literary works.
This variety of approaches triggers a reflection about the nature of his representation technique, in a moment in which “selfy” is a popular tendency. Which is the role of portrait? Is it supposed to show a unique face or a singular body? Or rather memories of nice moments? Or the inner self of the male or female character represented in the portrait?
The answers given by cartoonists, photographers or painters differ, of course.
